Can pc games be installed on a second computer from a disc copied on another computer?

Joe W asked the question:

A friend of mine gave me a pc game cd with an installer. The disc had 50 games on it and all the games installed on my comp without using any serial numbers. He copied them from installed files on his computer. I would like to do the same from my comp to my grands comp. HOW!
Can it be done if the games are prepatched?

it depends on the game. however most games use registry entries when they install so it is a very complex undertaking to transfer them from one machine to another from the installation on the hard disk.

Stand-alone games (those that dont install to registry) will transfer no problem.

If you need to back up a game the best way is to copy the install disk.
